Málaga surprises almost everyone who visits. Spain's sixth-largest city has spent decades being overlooked as a mere gateway to the Costa del Sol — a place people fly into and drive away from. That's changing fast. The Picasso Museum, the Pompidou Centre, the Carmen Thyssen and 40-plus other galleries have turned it into Spain's self-styled “museum city”. The restaurant scene now carries two Michelin stars. And the old town, all marble streets and baroque churches, is one of Andalusia's most genuinely lived-in city centres.

I've been based on the Costa del Sol for years and know Málaga better than anywhere else on this site. Every guide below is personally researched — hotels visited, restaurants eaten in, transport timed. No press trips, no affiliate-driven rankings.
